Medicare β€” What You Need to Know

How the Mental Health Treatment Plan Works

Your Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) gives you access to free or bulk-billed psychology sessions through Medicare. Here's everything you need to know.

πŸ†“
10 Free Sessions
Your MHTP gives you 10 free (bulk-billed) sessions per calendar year β€” from January 1st to December 31st.
πŸ”„
Annual Reset
On January 1st each year your session count resets and you get access to a fresh 10 appointments for the new year.
πŸ₯
6 Sessions at a Time
Your GP can refer for a maximum of 6 sessions at a time. Between each block, you'll need a quick GP visit to extend your referral.
♾️
Never Expires
Your MHTP never expires. You can use it year after year for as long as you need ongoing support.

1
Your GP creates your MHTP
Your GP writes a Mental Health Treatment Plan for you and grants an initial block of appointments β€” usually 6 sessions, sometimes 4 or 5. They send the MHTP and a referral letter directly to your psychologist.
2
Remote Therapy contacts you to book in
We'll reach out to ask you to fill in our intake form and book your first appointment. After your first session, your psychologist will send a referral acceptance letter back to your GP.
3
You attend your sessions
Your therapist will rebook you after each appointment and you'll work through the remaining sessions on your referral β€” usually 6 in total.
4
Your psychologist writes to your GP
Near the end of your referral block, your psychologist writes a progress update letter to your GP. Remote Therapy admin sends the letter and you'll receive an SMS and email letting you know it's time to book a GP appointment.
πŸ’‘ Tip: Your therapist may suggest you book your GP appointment before your last session so the referral extension arrives faster and there's no gap in your therapy.
5
You see your GP for a referral extension
You attend a brief GP appointment to discuss your MHTP. Your GP writes a new referral letter requesting another block of sessions (usually 6) and sends it directly to us. You're welcome to request a copy for your own records just in case.
6
We rebook you and therapy continues
Once we receive your referral extension letter, we'll contact you to rebook β€” or let you know your next appointment date if your therapist has already reserved a spot for you.
Then steps 3–6 repeat for each new block of sessions, for as long as you continue therapy.

πŸ‘€
You

  • Book your GP appointment when we let you know it's time

β„Ή
If you use all 10 free sessions for the year but still have sessions remaining on your current referral block (e.g. you've only used 4 out of 6), you can carry those over and use them in the new year. We'll keep track of this automatically and reach out to you in January to rebook.
πŸ’‘
Your session count resets on January 1st every year β€” so even once you've finished a block, you'll have access to another 10 free sessions in the new calendar year if you wish to continue.
